1.  Introduction
1.1 The author and the relating social backgrounds of this novel are introduced as follows
Margaret Mitchell becomes a Pulitzer price winner because of her single masterpiece, Gone with the Wind. The novel is rooted in Mitchell¡¯s careful and detailed knowledge of the U.S. Civil War and the Reconstruction in American South. She writes the novel, intending to depict southern women who have lived a leisurely life in the plantations. As a worldwide literature masterpiece, the novel embodies the culture of a specific time. Through reading, we cannot only enjoy the author¡¯s fluent writing style, vivid depiction and detailed description, but can also experience that period of history and feel that period of culture the author described.
As the war destroys the previous peace and comfort, women enter new areas of activities. Since a large amount of men from every class go out to fight, women have to play many of their duties. Most southern ladies shoulder the burdensome tasks related to the administration of the plantations. They give the soldiers their hearty support by providing them with food and clothing, nursing the sick and wounded. They work in factories, engage in charitable activities, and even comment on political matters. These transitions are surely quite different from the experience of the vast majority of women during the prewar years. However, most people are too busy trying to view the activities as somehow threatening. The emergence of "new women" is related to the problem of change and progress. It has been thought that obvious moneymaking and even talk of money are vulgar in the extreme. But most people are obliged to make money by the war.  If they don't part with the old ways and rush for pennies, they won't go with the tide of historical development and will be forsaken by the times. Mitchell designs a portrait of southern female experience as it is, that is, Scarlett O¡¯Hara. In the process of changing, there are also some women who even never think of change, those are women like Ellen and Melanie.
1.2  Successful female characters make Gone with the Wind a permanent novel in      literary history
At an intermediate point of view, Gone with the Wind, is a novel that still existing some kind of racial discrimination. Just as some scholars have figured out, there are only strong white female characters in this novel, while black females still live in dark. Anyway, depriving of racial problem, I suppose Gone with the Wind a great novel written for women.
In this paper, I just select Ellen¡¢Melanie and Scarlet as my female models. They represent different kinds of women in a fast changing world. Some may say this topic has seemed a certain cliche, but, just calm down and take some meditations, you will easily find the novel aims to arouse females¡¯ gender consciousness and self-consciousness. Meanwhile, it teaches females how to be women possessing traditional feminine virtues, like Ellen and Melanie. It can also teaches females how to be independent new women, like Scarlett. In a word, this novel can bring females much advice in well-playing female roles. Although the beautiful scenery and characters in the novel have been the past memory, the essence of female-role-playing is left permanently. It values every woman¡¯s meditation on these female characters.
